MP visits Livability care home in support of access for disabled people

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden showed his support for greater access for disabled people during a visit to Livability care home New Court Place in Borehamwood.

During the Conservative MP’s visit, Mr Dowden spent time talking to residents and Livability staff on a range of issues.

Residents voiced their experiences around the poor condition of local roads, the inaccessibility of high street shops, pubs and even disabled toilets, and issues with public transport transport and the exploitation of disabled people by cab companies overcharging them.

Mr Dowden said:

‘I am grateful to the residents, Gladys Quinn, the manager, and to Stephen Springer (Policy Advisor) and Kemi Bamgbose (Campaigns Coordinator) from Livability for giving me the opportunity to learn more about the issues affecting the New Court Place community.’

‘I am very concerned that there are still shops and restaurants who do not have wheelchair friendly access, that buses and taxis can be inaccessible and that poor pavement surfaces pose a danger each time residents venture outdoors.’

Mr Dowden also discussed the impact the budget might have on disabled people and local authority, who are looking at more cuts.

‘I intend to champion these issues at borough and county level. I will also be approaching the local ward councillors to arrange an introduction to the residents so that we can work together to see these issues resolved.’

Gladys Quinn, the service manager at New Court Place said:

‘We were very pleased that Mr Oliver Dowden was able to take time out from his busy schedule to visit us on this occasion. His visit had a great impact on the residents as they feel that they have been listened to, and would very much like to say thank you to Mr Dowden.’

The residents at New Court Place and Livability are hoping that, having made contact with Mr Dowden, the issues raised will lead to an improvement in services for disabled people who access the local community.
